Potential Underlying Causes

If your diesel truck is losing power, several potential underlying causes exist. Although we’ll need to accurately diagnose the problem for you, we can relate some of the most common issues that cause power loss. Your diesel operates in a combustion balancing act, meaning that there’s always a delicate dance between fuel, air, and exhaust ratios. Anything that throws off the balance may lead to power loss. One often troublesome issue is a clogged filter. Debris in the fuel filter can starve your engine of enough fuel, while a dirty air filter obstructs the flow of air needed for combustion. Related problems include a clogged diesel particulate filter and a malfunctioning turbo unit. Other concerns include water in the fuel, a bad fuel pump, and failing fuel injectors. Any of these will result in a lack of fuel flow to the combustion chambers. Another concern is a bad EGR valve. It can become clogged with carbon deposits over time. This is problematic because this valve is responsible for circulating small amounts of exhaust gases into the intake manifold. Although this may seem counterintuitive, it actually serves a couple of purposes. Your engine’s operating/combustion temperature is reduced. That, in turn, reduces the number of harmful gases produced and expelled by your vehicle. The computer/ECU may sometimes be blamed, requiring tuning to restore proper performance.
